We celebrated a spectacular Adkin High School Reunion Weekend!
The Adkin High School Alumni & Friends celebrated a spectacular two-day reunion weekend on theweekend of Saturday, August 31, 2024, through Sunday, September 1, 2024.
Adkin High School has always been more than just a school—it’s a community, a legacy, and a family. Our rich history and the lifelong bonds we’ve formed over the years are what make gatherings like these so special. Whether you graduated decades ago or were part of the last classes before the school closed, this reunion is an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, reminisce about the good times, and celebrate the enduring spirit of Adkin High.
Our Alumni met on Saturday morning, August 31 at the St. Augustus AME Zion Church Fellowship Hall for registration and a Meet & Greet Session. At 10 AM, we continued with Breakfast and a Business Meeting. We were all invited to a Tour of the Adkin High Gym Complex at 1:00 PM which was in conjunction with a special event filming for “Basketball Heaven“, by Resita Cox and T. Dixon Media LLC. This agency is documenting the legacy of successful Basketball players from Kinston. During the hours of 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Saturday, the Pirates were able to gather together again at the St. Augustus AME Zion Church for fellowship and to participate in various table board games. They utilized this time to share pictures, videos, yearbooks and other memories. On Sunday morning, September 1, at 10:00, the Pirates assembled for worship at the St. Augustus AME Zion Church. The final event for the weekend festivities took place at the King’s Restaurant on Hwy 70 East (405 E. New Bern Rd) Kinston, where we gathered for the Reunion Farewell Banquet at 4:00 PM. The Master of Ceremony for the evening was Ronald Murphy (‘70). The theme for the evening was, “Let’s Do It Again “. The Invocation was offered by Dr. Audrey Rouse Nobles (‘70) and the Welcome was extended by Rosa Brown Gray (‘67). Greetings were provided by Robert Koonce (‘70) (Kinston Chapter) and Eleanor Darden Stewart (‘55) (DC Chapter). There was a Roll Call of Classes with someone responding from Classes 1951 to 1970. Reflections were offered by Thad Rhodes for the Class of 1951, Edwin Jones for the Class of 1963, Marilyn Jones Patrick for the Class of 1967 and Dr. Preston Harris for the Class of 1970. The food was very delicious and the Fellowship was great. We closed this memorable event by singing the School Song,
O’ we love the halls of Adkin, that surround us here today, And we will not forget, Tho we be far, far away. To the hallowed of Adkin, every voice will bid farewell, and shimmer off the twilight, like the old vesper bell. One day a hush will fall, the footsteps of us all will echo down the halls and disappear, but as we sadly start our journey far apart; a part of every heart will linger here, in the sacred halls of Adkin, where we've lived and learned to know; that thru the years we'll see you, in the sweet afterglow.
Our Reunion participants were able to enjoy all of these exciting weekend festivities for a total cost of only $100.
